Nigeria's Renewable Energy Focus Shifts to Storage Solutions

Nigeria's Renewable Energy Focus Shifts to Storage Solutions

Nigeria's renewable energy industry is transitioning towards energy storage solutions as the costs of solar technology have dramatically decreased, with component costs falling by 100% over the last 10 to 15 years. Rean Ayo Adedimulua, President of the Renewable Energy Association of Nigeria, stated that the perception of renewable energy as prohibitively expensive no longer reflects market realities.

The shift towards solar energy is becoming increasingly competitive compared to conventional energy sources. Abba Aliyu, Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of the Rural Electrification Agency, highlighted that battery storage will play a central role in the next phase of investment in Nigeria's power sector.

The agency is developing 48 interconnected mini-grids with a combined capacity of 288 megawatts to improve reliability and connect isolated electrical systems. Additionally, the agency is deploying artificial intelligence to map 750,000 communities across Nigeria to guide project development and investment decisions.
