Nigeria's Renewable Energy Focus Shifts to Storage Solutions

Nigeria's renewable energy industry is entering a new phase with a focus on energy storage solutions as solar technology costs have decreased by 100% over the last 10 to 15 years. Ayo Adedimulua, President of the Renewable Energy Association of Nigeria, stated that while renewable energy remains perceived as expensive, it no longer reflects market realities.

The cost of renewable energy components has fallen by 200-300%, making solar increasingly competitive with conventional energy sources. Abba Aliyu, Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of the Rural Electrification Agency, emphasized that battery storage will play a central role in the next phase of investment in Nigeria's power sector.

He noted that future capital will be directed towards storage rather than generation, unlocking new opportunities within the renewable energy value chain. The potential for renewable energy in Nigeria extends beyond solar, with significant untapped resources in hydro, wind, biomass, and geothermal energy.
