Nigeria's Textile Imports Hit N1.06 Trillion in 2025

According to the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS), Nigeria's textile imports surged to N1.06 trillion in 2025, a notable increase that underscores the country's growing dependence on foreign textile products to meet domestic demand. This figure represents a near tripling of textile imports over the past four years, reflecting strong consumer demand and population growth.

Despite Nigeria's once vibrant textile industry, particularly in cities like Kaduna, Kano, and Lagos, the sector has faced significant declines due to severe structural challenges, leading to factory shutdowns and reduced operations. Consequently, the local market increasingly relies on imported garments, fabrics, and yarns.

Stakeholders in the manufacturing sector are calling for improved access to electricity, financing, and modern machinery to revitalize the textile industry. Additionally, there are calls for stricter enforcement against smuggling to protect local manufacturers and create employment opportunities, ultimately aiming to stimulate industrial growth and reduce Nigeria's import bill.
