Nigeria's Transport Equipment Imports Hit N6.54 Trillion

According to the latest foreign trade statistics from the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS), Nigeria's imports of transport equipment have surged to N6.54 trillion in 2025. This increase is primarily attributed to a rise in passenger vehicle imports, reflecting the country's ongoing reliance on foreign vehicles, machinery, and spare parts to support its logistics industry.

The data indicates a steady growth in transport equipment imports over the past four years, underscoring Nigeria's dependence on foreign markets for its vehicle industry. The recent rise in passenger car imports has been influenced by the weaker naira, which has elevated the local currency cost of importing vehicles.

Despite the high import values, demand for vehicles remains resilient among households and commercial transport operators. Analysts note that the growing vehicle fleet and industrial activities are driving this surge in import bills, which recorded a doubling to N254 billion in 2024.

There are calls for the expansion of domestic automobile assembly plants to strengthen local supply chains and reduce import dependence.
