NISO Clarifies Power Allocations to DisCos Amid Outages

The Nigerian Independent System Operator (NISO) addressed concerns regarding zero power allocations to Distribution Companies (DisCos) between March 20, 2022, and 2026. NISO stated that no DisCo experienced a complete cut-off of power supply during this period.

The agency attributed the shortfall in power allocations to persistent gas supply constraints rather than an arbitrary decision. NISO emphasized that the power grid remained operational despite limited generation capacity.

They clarified that the allocation process was guided by the Multi-Year Tariff Order (MYTO) framework, which ensures fair distribution of electricity among DisCos based on predefined transparent criteria. NISO sought to reinforce that their allocation decisions were neither arbitrary nor discriminatory, aiming to balance limited supply across the distribution network, particularly in areas experiencing near-total outages.
