NISO's NNPC 350MW Project and WAPP Admission to Boost Regional Grid Generation

The Nigerian Independent System Operator (NISO) emphasized the significance of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation's (NNPC) 350MW project and the Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) rollout in Abuja towards achieving the nation's target of 8,500MW grid generation capacity by the end of 2026. NISO's Managing Director, Moham Bello, expressed optimism during a site assessment visit to the project location in Abuja, identifying key areas for enhancement to accelerate project completion.

Additionally, NISO was formally admitted to the West African Power Pool (WAPP) during its 20th session in Togo, marking a major milestone in Nigeria's electricity sector reform and regional power integration efforts. This admission reflects recognition of NISO's mandate as Nigeria's independent system market operator responsible for ensuring the reliability, transparency, and efficiency of the nation's electricity grid and market.

As a WAPP member, NISO will contribute to regional grid coordination, information sharing, system planning, and the development of a competitive regional electricity market to promote grid stability, cross-border electricity trade, and sustainable energy development in West Africa.
