NIWA and NSIB Collaborate to Enhance Waterway Safety

Umar Yusuf Girei, the Acting Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of the National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA), reaffirmed the agency's commitment to improving safety on Nigeria's inland waterways during a courtesy visit from the management of the Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau (NSIB) at NIWA headquarters in Lokoja. Both agencies pledged to collaborate closely to address the increasing incidents of boat mishaps.

Girei highlighted that many accidents are due to human factors such as negligence and overloading. He emphasized the importance of public awareness campaigns regarding safety guidelines, particularly the mandatory use of life jackets.

Girei warned against the dangers of overloading and night travel, urging compliance with safety regulations. He announced that NIWA would strengthen enforcement of its transportation code, with violators facing strict sanctions.

Captain Alex Badeh Junior, Director-General of NSIB, expressed concern over rising casualties and stressed the need for urgent collaboration to ensure safer navigation and reduce boat mishaps.
