NLC Calls for Minimum Wage Increase to ₦70,000

During the Nigeria Rights of Workers Summit 2026 held in Birnin Kebbi, Kebbi State, labor leaders, including Deputy President of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) Adewale Adeyanju, called for a review of the national minimum wage, currently set at ₦70,000. They argued that this amount has become inadequate due to rising inflation and the increasing cost of living, which has eroded workers' earnings.

The summit, themed “The Rights of Workers: Decent Work and a Just Economy in Nigeria,” aimed to address various issues affecting workers, including remuneration, workplace safety, and job security. Adeyanju emphasized the need for fresh negotiations with the Federal and State Governments to reflect current economic realities.

The event, convened by Ekpa Stanley, Executive Director of Call a Lawyer, also featured former NLC President Ayuba Wabba, who stressed that decent work encompasses more than just salary increases, highlighting the importance of workers' rights and social protection.
