NLC Opposes Life Pension Bill for Plateau Lawmakers

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress, alongside the Coalition of Civil Society Organizations in Plateau State, have rejected a proposed bill that seeks to grant life pension benefits to members of the Plateau State House of Assembly. During a joint press conference on Wednesday, July 30, 2023, NLC Plateau State Chairman Eugen Manji described the proposal as anti-people and self-serving, threatening to picket the assembly until the bill is withdrawn.

Manji accused assembly members of abusing their autonomy to pursue policies that serve personal interests. He called on Governor Caleb Mutfwang to intervene and prevent the bill's passage, warning that it could create unnecessary tension in the state.

Kenneth Shammah, Chairman of the Trade Union Congress in Plateau State, criticized the bill as insensitive, particularly given the state's ongoing struggle with pension arrears. Steve Aluko from the Coalition of Civil Society Organizations labeled the bill undemocratic and extortionist, emphasizing the need for transparency in public service.
