Plateau Assembly Withdraws Pension Bill Amid Public Outcry

The Plateau State House of Assembly announced the withdrawal of a bill that sought to grant life pensions and retirement benefits to former lawmakers. This decision was made public during a press conference on Wednesday by Joseph Gokum, the Majority Leader and Chairman of the Joint Committee on Rules and Business, Finance and House Services.

The bill, introduced earlier in the month, faced immediate criticism due to the ongoing economic challenges in Plateau State, including unpaid gratuities and pensions for retired civil servants. Labor unions, including the Nigeria Labour Congress and the Trade Union Congress, condemned the bill as “insensitive” and threatened mass protests if it proceeded.

Gokum stated that the Assembly had considered the public's concerns and acknowledged the need for laws that promote equity and welfare for all citizens. He described the withdrawal as a demonstration of maturity and respect for public opinion, thanking stakeholders for their input.
