US Congressman Calls for Nnamdi Kanu's Release or Retrial

The detention of Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), has reached the US Congress, where Congressman John James has moved for his immediate release or a new trial in accordance with the Nigerian Constitution. This motion was announced by Kanu’s Special Counsel, Aloy Ejimakor, on X.

The motion urges US lawmakers to support a call for the Nigerian government to either conduct a new trial for Kanu or release him immediately. This development follows threats of legal action from Kanu’s legal team regarding comments made by Chigozie Nnabugwu, who suggested during a television interview that peace would return to the Southeast if Kanu were killed.

Ejimakor condemned Nnabugwu's statement as dangerous and unlawful, arguing it could incite violence and undermine the judicial process, as Kanu's case is still pending in court. Kanu's legal team demanded a public retraction from Nnabugwu and an apology from the television station that aired the comments.
