IPOB Demands Nnamdi Kanu's Release Following UN Findings

The Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) has reiterated its call for the immediate release of its leader, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, after findings from the United Nations Working Group on Arbitrary Detention regarding his arrest and detention. IPOB demands compensation for what it describes as violations of Kanu's fundamental rights and urges the Nigerian government to respond to the UN's findings.

The UN Working Group adopted Opinion No. 25/2022, which deemed Kanu's deprivation of liberty as arbitrary and called for his release and compensation. IPOB criticized the Nigerian government for not implementing this recommendation and accused the British government of applying international law selectively, particularly in relation to Kanu, who is a British citizen.

Kanu was arrested in Kenya in June 2021 and subsequently transferred to Nigeria, where he faces terrorism-related charges. IPOB's spokesperson, Emma Powerful, emphasized the need for public pressure on the Nigerian government to respect international human rights findings.
