Nnamdi Kanu Demands Hearing for Pending Legal Cases

Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), has formally requested the Chief Justice of Nigeria and the President of the Court of Appeal to list and hear his two pending cases. This request was communicated through a statement issued by Prince Emmanuel Kanu on behalf of the Okwu-Kanu Family.

Kanu remains in detention serving a life sentence, and the family criticized the Federal Government for its lack of engagement in the legal proceedings. They highlighted that on 13 October 2022, the Court of Appeal had discharged Kanu and quashed the criminal charges against him, but the Federal Government subsequently filed for a civil stay of execution, preventing his release.

The family demanded that the judiciary act with urgency regarding Kanu's freedom, similar to the urgency shown when the government sought to prevent his release. Kanu urged the judiciary to allow the Federal Government to defend its position regarding his conviction and life sentence, emphasizing that silence and delay should not replace judicial adjudication.
