NNPC Misunderstood, Says Dr. Emmanuella Arukwe

Dr. Emmanuella Arukwe, the pioneer managing director of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company (NNPC) Foundation, spoke on Tuesday in Abuja at the 2nd Reput Roundtable organized by the Federal Capital Territory chapter of the Nigerian Institute of Public Relations.

She highlighted that the NNPC is often misunderstood by Nigerians, who blame its legacy for poor storytelling and negative perceptions. Arukwe argued that lingering sentiments about the old NNPC continue to shape public opinion about its successor entities, despite reforms and transformations under the Petroleum Industry Act.

She emphasized the importance of corporate governance and the need for the NNPC to communicate its high standards and social investments effectively. Over the past three years, the NNPC Foundation has executed various social intervention programs across Nigeria, including the Federal Capital Territory.

Arukwe also noted the challenges posed by misinformation on digital platforms and the role of artificial intelligence in reputation management. The discussion included insights on public trust and Nigeria's economic realities, with a focus on improving corporate communication to support economic recovery.
