NNPP Warns FG Against Rushing State Police Creation

The New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) has warned the Federal Government against rushing the creation of state police, urging the National Assembly to ensure adequate reforms and safeguards are in place before implementation. Nweze Onu, the Deputy National Chairman of NNPP, stated that constitutional reforms should be driven by broad national consensus rather than political expediency, especially with the 2027 general elections approaching.

He expressed concerns about the potential for state police to be used by state governors to intimidate political opponents and suppress dissent. Onu cited historical examples of security institutions being manipulated for partisan purposes, referencing existing regional security outfits like Ebubeagu and Amotekun.

He called for a thorough evaluation of current state-backed security outfits and emphasized the need for independent oversight, transparent recruitment, and strict penalties for political misuse. The NNPP advocates for a police framework that guarantees operational independence and protects the rights of all Nigerians, urging a wider national consultation to build trust in the proposed state police system.
