NCDC Confirms No Hantavirus Cases in Nigeria

The Nigerian Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) has reported that there are currently no confirmed cases of hantavirus in Nigeria. Dr.

Jide Idris, the Director-General of the NCDC, provided a public health update stating that the chance of infection spreading in the country is low. The agency is closely monitoring the situation, particularly due to a global cluster of cases linked to a cruise ship that has affected several countries.

Health teams in these countries are conducting investigations and tracing contacts. Hantavirus is primarily spread through contact with rodent waste, and early symptoms can include fever and gastrointestinal issues, with severe cases leading to respiratory problems.

Dr. Idris emphasized that while the situation is serious, it is not commonly recorded in Nigeria.

The NCDC will continue to track developments and strengthen surveillance systems to detect any potential imported cases early. Nigerians are advised to maintain cleanliness and reduce contact with rodents as preventive measures.
