No Evidence Links Saraki to Offa Robbery, Legal Opinions

Two separate legal opinions issued by the Office of the Attorney General of the Federation in 2018 concluded that there was no evidence linking former Senate President Bukola Saraki to the Offa robbery that occurred on April 5, 2018, in Kwara State, resulting in the deaths of 33 individuals, including a pregnant woman and 12 police officers. The legal advice, dated June 22 and August 23, 2018, was signed by the Director of Public Prosecutions, Mohammed U.

E., on behalf of Attorney General Abubakar Malami. Following the robbery, police arrested several suspects, including alleged gang leader Ayoad Akinnibosun, who claimed that the gang operated as political thugs for Saraki.

However, the Inspector General of Police's initial legal advice stated that no link was established between Saraki and the crime. The Office of the Attorney General later maintained its position, recommending further investigation into whether Saraki had knowledge of the attack.

In September 2024, the Kwara State High Court convicted five defendants in the robbery case, while Saraki denied any involvement, alleging that the current governor, Abdulrahman Abdulrazaq, aimed to tarnish his image.
