Northern Senators Demand Urgent Action on State Police

The Northern Senators Forum, led by Senator Abdulaziz Musa Yar’Adua of Katsina-Central, is calling for urgent action on the establishment and operationalization of state police due to a resurgence of terrorist attacks in northern Nigeria. Recent incidents in Plateau, Benue, Adamawa, and Sokoto have resulted in significant loss of life, with at least 36 people killed in attacks on communities in Adamawa and Sokoto.

The senators urged the Federal Government to prioritize the State Police Bill awaiting ratification and to collaborate with state governors and their legislative bodies. They specifically requested the Presidential Working Group, chaired by Honourable Femi Gbajabiamila, to expedite the implementation of the state police framework.

The forum condemned the recent attacks in Gaya and Ungushi villages, which included the deaths of security personnel and civilians. They also called for investments in community vigilante groups to support police and military efforts in combating terrorism.
