Norway Exempts EU and EEA Nationals from Residence Permits

Norway has confirmed that nationals from the European Union (EU) and the European Economic Area (EEA) are exempt from needing a residence permit to live or work in the country. This exemption allows EU and EEA citizens to enter, reside, and work in Norway without undergoing the residence permit process that is mandatory for nationals from other countries.

However, any EU or EEA national intending to stay in Norway for more than three months is required to register with the police. This registration is a separate obligation from obtaining a residence permit and involves a much lighter administrative process, lacking the extensive documentation and waiting periods associated with permits for non-EU nationals.

For individuals from all other countries, including those from Asia and the Americas, the standard residence permit rules remain in effect, necessitating the acquisition of the appropriate permit before working or staying in Norway beyond a short-term visit.
