NPC Launches Digital Birth and Death Registration in Nigeria

The National Population Commission (NPC) announced the launch of a digital birth and death registration system, effective July 1, 2026. Hon.

Engr. Yori Afolabi, representing Kogi State, described this initiative as a landmark reform aimed at modernizing Nigeria's civil registration system.

The digital platform, known as the e-CRV system or VitalReg, was initiated alongside the launch of the nationwide rollout of the e-CRV by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in November 2023. Currently, Nigeria records an estimated five million unregistered births annually, with birth registration at 57% and death registration below 20%.

The NPC plans to establish 4,011 registration centers across the country's 774 local government areas, with an expansion goal to 8,000 centers. The VitalReg platform will provide efficient registration services, including online access and automated data validation.

The NPC has partnered with ALGON, NIMC, UNICEF, and Barnksfort Technology to enhance the system's security and maintenance. Additionally, the NPC reviewed fees for specialized administrative services to sustain the digital infrastructure while ensuring that birth registration services remain highly subsidized.
