NPC Launches Digital Birth and Death Registration in Kogi

The National Population Commission (NPC) commenced the full digital registration of births and deaths in Nigeria through its Electronic Civil Registration and Vital Statistics (E-CRVS) system, known as the VitalReg platform, in Lokoja, Kogi State. This initiative, announced by Federal Commissioner Hon.

Yori Afolabi, took effect on July 1, 2026. Afolabi described the transition as a significant reform aimed at modernizing Nigeria's civil registration system.

The nationwide rollout builds on the E-CRVS initiative launched by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in November 2023. Currently, birth registration stands at about 57% nationwide, while death registration is below 20%.

To address these gaps, the NPC has established 4,011 registration centers across Nigeria's 774 local government areas, with plans to expand to about 8,000. The VitalReg platform offers efficient registration services, including online access and digital certificate issuance.

The NPC has partnered with ALGON, NIMC, UNICEF, and Barnksforte Technologies Limited to decentralize birth registration and improve access to legal identity.
