NPC Launches Digital Birth and Death Registration in Yobe

The National Population Commission (NPC) has initiated full digital registration of births and deaths in Yobe State under the Electronic Civil Registration and Vital Statistics (E-CRVS) system, effective from July 1, 2026. This initiative aims to enhance legal identity coverage and strengthen demographic data for national planning.

Hon. Tonga Betara Bularafa, the Federal Commissioner of NPC in Yobe State, announced this during a press briefing in Damaturu.

He described the digital transition as a significant reform in Nigeria's civil registration system, ensuring accurate capture of every birth and death through the VitalReg platform. The reform follows the inauguration of the National Coordination Committee on Civil Registration and Vital Statistics and the launch of the E-CRVS system by President Tinubu on November 8, 2023.

Currently, birth registration coverage in Nigeria is about 57%, while death registration is below 20%. To improve these figures, NPC has established 4,011 registration centers nationwide and plans to increase this to 8,000.

The VitalReg platform will offer faster registration services and improved data validation. Additionally, NPC has partnered with ALGON, NIMC, UNICEF, and Barnksforte Technologies Limited to decentralize registration services and enhance community participation.
