NPC Launches Digital Birth and Death Registration in Zamfara

The National Population Commission (NPC) has initiated full digital registration of births and deaths in Zamfara State using the VitalReg platform, marking a significant step in the nationwide rollout of the Electronic Civil Registration and Vital Statistics (E-CRVS) system. This transition took effect on July 1, 2026, and will encompass all 14 local government areas in the state.

Nasiru Muazu Magarya, the Federal Commissioner for NPC in Zamfara, described this initiative as one of the most transformative reforms in Nigeria's civil registration history, aligning with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda. Currently, Nigeria records approximately five million births annually, yet millions remain unregistered, with birth registration coverage at about 57% and death registration below 20%.

Magarya emphasized that these gaps hinder legal identity and reliable data for national planning. The NPC has partnered with the Association of Local Governments of Nigeria, NIMC, UNICEF, and Barnksforte Technologies Limited to decentralize registration services at the community level and announced a review of fees for specialized administrative services.
