Violence Erupts After NPFL Draw in Ilorin, Officials Attacked

On Wednesday, violence erupted in Ilorin after a dramatic draw in the Nigerian Premier Football League (NPFL) match between Kwara United and Rivers United. The incident began when Rivers United forward David Sholumad scored an equalizer in stoppage time, leading to anger from the home crowd.

Eyewitness accounts reported that fans confronted match officials, claiming that Kwara United goalkeeper Suraju Ayeleso was fouled in the build-up to the goal. The situation escalated as fans reportedly threw chairs and bottles of water, attempting to physically attack the officials.

Rivers United's general manager, Okei Kpalukwu, was assaulted, sustaining visible injuries that required treatment. Security personnel struggled to contain the situation, which deteriorated rapidly, trapping Rivers United players, staff, and officials inside the stadium for 30 minutes.

No fatalities were confirmed, and the full extent of injuries remains unclear. The NPFL security authorities have not released an official statement regarding the incident, which is expected to reignite scrutiny over crowd control and stadium security.
