NPFL Pre-Season Tournament to Boost CAF Readiness
Davidson Owumi, the Chief Operating Officer of the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL), announced that a pre-season tournament in Jos will serve as a crucial preparation for Nigerian clubs participating in CAF club competitions. The tournament will feature league champions Rangers International, runners-up Rivers United, and President Federation Cup winners El-Kanemi Warriors, alongside two wildcard teams from Plateau State, Plateau United and Mighty Jets.
Katsina United has been invited to replace Shooting Stars. Owumi emphasized that with the NPFL season commencing shortly before the CAF matches, the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) and NPFL agreed that a competitive tournament would enhance player fitness and team cohesion.
The 2026/27 NPFL season is set to kick off on Friday, August 28, 2026, with Rangers International facing Katsina United in the opening match.
