NRC Investigates Wheel Defect in Warri-Itakpe Train Crash

The Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) released preliminary findings regarding the train derailment that occurred on June 8, 2026, at Warri-Itakpe, which resulted in four deaths and 64 injuries. The NRC's internal inquiry suggested a possible sudden bogie or wheel defect may have caused abnormal wheel-rail interaction, leading to excessive impact loading and loss of running stability.

However, this remains a working hypothesis pending the ongoing investigation by the Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau (NSIB). The NRC also noted that the manner of brake application might have contributed to the severity of the derailment, although this has not been confirmed as a definitive cause.

The train, which departed Itakpe with 482 individuals on board, derailed with five coaches, a locomotive, and a power car involved. Emergency response teams evacuated all passengers within two hours.

Four individuals, including a child, died, while 64 sustained various injuries. The NRC clarified that earlier reports of five fatalities were incorrect, confirming the toll at four after verification with the Delta State Medical Team.

The inquiry found no evidence of track vandalism, distinguishing this incident from previous derailments on the same service in November 2025.
