UK Investigates Essex Train Derailment with No Injuries

The Rail Accident Investigation Branch (RAIB) has initiated an investigation into a passenger train derailment that occurred on August 14, 2023, in Essex. The train, operated by Greater Anglia, was traveling from Southend Victoria to London Liverpool Street at approximately 77mph when it derailed around 2:08 PM, approximately 2.1 miles south-east of Wickford station.

Despite the incident, all 62 passengers on board were uninjured. The rearmost vehicle of the train, composed of two Class 720 electric multiple units, derailed and ran on the sleepers and ballast for about 1.5 miles.

The driver reported observing a kink in the track, which was corroborated by forward-facing CCTV footage showing misalignment at the derailment site. The RAIB's investigation will focus on the sequence of events leading to the derailment, track conditions, maintenance practices, and the impact of hot weather on the track's integrity.

The investigation is independent of any inquiries by the railway industry or the Office of Rail and Road, with findings to be published upon completion.
