NRS Commits to Transparent Mining Royalties Administration

The Nigeria Revenue Service (NRS) has committed to a transparent administration of mining royalties following the enactment of a new tax law signed by President Bola Tinubu in June 2025. Amina Ado, the Executive Director of the NRS, emphasized the need for fair and accountable management of the mining sector during a workshop with stakeholders.

The new framework aims to tackle long-standing issues such as illegal mining activities and revenue leakage, which have plagued the sector for decades. Ado noted that the mining sector has historically operated with low formal compliance, leading to minimal contributions to national revenue despite Nigeria's vast mineral deposits, including gold and lithium.

The NRS plans to reduce overlapping demands on mining operations and encourage compliance to ensure that the sector thrives. Ado warned that weak regulations have allowed illegal operations to flourish, particularly by foreign syndicates, and urged legitimate operators to embrace formalization for better security and legal protection.
