NRS to Collect Mineral Royalties from Mining Firms

The Nigeria Revenue Service (NRS) will assume responsibility for collecting mineral royalties from mining companies nationwide, as part of ongoing reforms to the country's tax system. This decision, announced in a statement on Friday, follows a meeting between NRS Chairman Dare Adekanmbi, Minister of Solid Minerals Development Dele Alak, and Dr.

Zacch Adedeji in Abuja. The new arrangement is based on the Nigeria Tax Law 2025, which grants NRS the authority to administer federal revenue collection.

The transition will officially take effect on January 1, 2026, as per the law enacted by President Bola Tinubu on June 26, 2025. Although the NRS will manage royalty collections, the Ministry of Solid Minerals Development will continue to provide technical support and coordinate industry activities.

The NRS aims to ensure that mining operations understand the new system and comply with requirements without disrupting operations, while also launching a nationwide sensitization program to educate operators on filing royalties under the new tax regime.
