NSIB Investigates Bonny Vessel Collision and Oil Spill

The Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau (NSIB) has commenced an investigation into a serious marine casualty that occurred on May 20, 2026, involving the collision of the container vessel MV Maersk Valparaiso and the oil tanker MT Ladi Martina at Bonny anchorage in River State. Following the notification of the incident, NSIB activated its marine occurrence response protocol and deployed an investigative team to Bonny on May 22, 2026.

The investigation aims to preserve evidence and includes interviewing the master and crew members, as well as collecting operational records and navigational data relevant to the casualty. The NSIB has also successfully downloaded voyage data recorder information for forensic navigational analysis.

The agency has formally notified the Transport Safety Investigation Bureau in Singapore in accordance with international maritime obligations. The NSIB reassured the public and maritime stakeholders that the investigation will be conducted independently and professionally, with a final report to be published upon completion.
