NSITF Calls for Legal Protections for Gig Workers

At the 66th Annual General Conference of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, Mr. Oluwaseun Faleye, Managing Director and Chief Executive of the Nigeria Social Insurance Trust Fund (NSITF), called for the NBA to advocate for the expansion of Nigeria’s legal framework to include protections for informal and gig workers. Faleye, represented by Mrs. Bridget Ashang, General Manager of the Abuja Region of the Fund, spoke on the theme “Beyond Limits: Expanding the Legal Frontiers of Workplace Protection and Social Security in Nigeria.” He highlighted that social security is essential for human dignity and resilience, providing access to healthcare and income security.

Faleye noted that the Employees’ Compensation Scheme (ECS) exists to ensure that no worker falls alone, with contributions made solely by employers. He outlined six areas where the NBA could contribute, including raising awareness and advocating for amendments to labor laws to reflect the changing nature of work.
