NTI to Coordinate Teacher Professionalisation for 250,000

The National Teachers’ Institute (NTI), located in Kaduna, has been appointed to lead the Federal Government’s Accelerated Teacher Professionalisation Pathway (ATPP), a program aimed at assisting 250,000 serving teachers lacking professional teaching qualifications in obtaining recognized credentials. Introduced by the Minister of Education, Dr Tunji Alausa, the initiative seeks to bridge qualification gaps and elevate professional standards within Nigeria’s basic education system.

NTI, under the leadership of its Director and Chief Executive, Prof. Sadiya Sani Daura, will act as the coordinating secretariat, supervised by the Federal Ministry of Education. The ATPP targets teachers currently teaching without professional qualifications and outside the licensing framework of the Teachers Registration Council of Nigeria (TRCN).

The program will offer two qualification routes: the Postgraduate Diploma in Education (PGDE) for degree holders in non-education fields and the Professional Diploma in Education (PDE) for those with National Diplomas. The program will utilize a blended learning model and will assess teaching practices in the teachers' existing schools.
