NUC Signs $65M World Bank Contract for Education Reform

The National Universities Commission (NUC) launched a new initiative on Wednesday, signing a $65 million performance contract backed by the World Bank. This initiative, aimed at transforming Nigeria into a global hub for competitive professional procurement and social standards, will enhance the capacity of universities.

The project, known as SPESS, is designed to address the critical manpower gap in procurement and environmental management within the Nigerian university system. The contract was signed in Abuja by NUC Executive Secretary Professor Abdullahi Yusufu Ribadu, marking a significant milestone in Nigeria's efforts to strengthen accountability and sustainable development across both public and private sectors.

The project will expand its impact by 2026, focusing on developing curricula, postgraduate diplomas, and master's degrees, while also improving infrastructure and digital learning platforms. The NUC aims to produce at least 60 PhD graduates and attract foreign students, with partnerships already established with international institutions.
