NUJ Condemns Governor Otti's Harassment of Journalists

The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) has strongly condemned the harassment and verbal intimidation of journalists by Dr. Alex Otti, the Governor of Abia State.

This condemnation follows a media engagement where journalists sought to verify data demonstrating the impact of government policies on the lives of Abians. The NUJ expressed deep concern over the hostile environment created for journalists performing their constitutional duties, which is essential for holding public office holders accountable.

They emphasized that the actions of Governor Otti undermine democratic values and press freedom, which are guaranteed by the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. The NUJ called on Governor Otti to refrain from actions that intimidate journalists, uphold principles of transparency and accountability, and publicly reaffirm his administration's commitment to press freedom.

Alhassan Yahya, the President of NUJ, stated that the organization will continue to defend the rights and safety of media practitioners in Abia State and across Nigeria.
