NUPRC Launches Emission Tracker for Methane Reduction

The Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission (NUPRC) has initiated the Nigerian Oil and Gas Industry Emission Tracker (NOGIET) to support Nigeria's target of a 60% reduction in methane emissions by 2035. The tracker was handed over to the NUPRC's chief executive, Oritsemeyiwa Eyesan, at the Commission's headquarters in Abuja.
Captain John Tonlagha, the executive commissioner for Health, Safety, Environment and Community (HSEC), represented Eyesan during the handover. NOGIET aims to enhance methane monitoring, reporting, and regulatory enforcement, transitioning operators from estimation-based to measurement-based emissions reporting by the first quarter of 2027.
The platform integrates satellite-based methane plume detection and facility-level emissions measurements, allowing regulators to identify emission hotspots and discrepancies in reported data. Developed in partnership with the Stakeholder Democracy Network (SDN) and supported by the Global Methane Hub, NOGIET promotes coordinated methane management across the oil and gas sector.
Inemo Samiama, Board Chairman of SDN, confirmed the platform's full handover at no cost to the Commission.
