NUT Condemns School Attacks, Warns of Teacher Withdrawal

The Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) issued a statement condemning the recent attacks on schools, which they described as barbaric and inhuman. The statement, signed by NUT National President Audu Amba and Secretary General Clinton Ikpitibo, followed an attack on May 15, 2026, in Oyo State's Oriir Local Government Area.

This attack affected three schools: Ahoro Esinel Primary School, Ahoro Esinel Baptist Nursery and Primary School, and Yawota Accord Union School. During the incident, a school principal was abducted along with seven teachers and 30 pupils, while one teacher was shot dead.

The NUT expressed deep pain over the killing of the teacher and raised concerns about the safety of educators and students. They called on security agencies to enhance rescue efforts and ensure the safe release of abducted individuals.

The union warned that teachers might withdraw their services if attacks on schools continue, as they cannot effectively discharge their duties in an atmosphere of fear and insecurity.
