Nwachukwu Sets World Record, Wins Gold for Nigeria

Goodness Chiemerie Nwachukwu won a gold medal and set a world record in the Women’s Discuss F42-44/F61-64 category at the ongoing 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland, with a throw of 39.66m. This victory brought Team Nigeria's total gold medal count to seven.

Nwachukwu, 27, successfully defended her Commonwealth Games discuss gold medal from Birmingham four years ago. Additionally, 19-year-old Jessica Oji made history by winning a silver medal with her best throw of 17.87m.

Team Nigeria officials expressed relief at Nwachukwu's gold, especially after Kanyinsola Ajayi's disappointment in the 100m final. Another athlete with Nigerian ancestry, Funmi Oduwaiye, won silver for Wales with a throw of 38.52m.

Team Nigeria's Destiny Agbo placed fifth with a throw of 33.79m. Looking ahead, Chukwuebuka Enekwechi qualified for the Men’s Shot Put final with a throw of 20.03m, while other athletes are set to compete for medals in various events.
