Nworgu Secures Nigeria's First Gold at Glasgow 2026

Nworgu, aged 24, won Team Nigeria's first gold medal at the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games on Friday in the women's para powerlifting lightweight category. She set a new Games record twice, starting with a successful first-attempt lift of 118kg, scoring 114.1 points, which put her in the lead after the opening round.

Less than 10 minutes later, she improved her record by lifting 123kg, achieving a score of 119 points to secure the gold medal. In recognition of her achievement, Nworgu received an instant cash reward of $5,000 at the competition venue, along with an additional $5,000 paid directly into her account, totaling $10,000.

Her victory marked a perfect start for Team Nigeria's para powerlifting campaign in Glasgow, setting a positive tone for further success on the opening day of competition.
