OAU Student Oluwole Seun Dies by Suicide in Ile-Ife

Oluwole Seun, a final-year student in the Department of Materials Science and Engineering at Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife, reportedly died by suicide on September 15, 2026. The motive for his action remains unclear, as friends noted no unusual behavior prior to the incident.

OAU's Public Relations Officer, Abiodun Olarewaju, confirmed that the university received an emergency report around 1:30 pm on the day of the incident, which occurred at an off-campus apartment in the Damico area of Ooni Layout. The OAU Quick Response and Security Team, along with officers from the Moore ‘A’ Division of the Nigeria Police Force, responded to the scene.

The student was taken to the University Health Centre, where he was pronounced dead on arrival. OAU management expressed deep concern and stated that items and information from the scene have been handed over to the police for investigation.

Vice-Chancellor Professor Adebayo Simeon Bamire extended condolences and encouraged students facing difficulties to utilize campus support services.
