Obasanjo Addresses Corruption's Impact on Nigerian Poverty

On September 29, 2026, former President Chief Olusegun Obasanjo addressed the issue of corruption in Nigeria, stating it has exacerbated poverty among the nation's underprivileged. At the public presentation of Dr Wahab Shittu's three-volume book, “Unexplained Wealth: A trilogy of Nigerian Financial Law,” Obasanjo called for accountability from those responsible for the country’s corruption.

He labeled corruption as "development’s greatest, deadly peril," noting that it impoverishes the poor further. Obasanjo highlighted his efforts during his presidency to combat corruption, including establishing the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission and the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission.

Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi II, stressed the need for legal and political reforms to address unexplained wealth, while former Vice President Professor Yemi Osinbajo, represented by Ade Ipaye, advocated for a fair system to recover stolen assets without criminalizing legitimate wealth. Professor Olanrewaju Fagbohun warned against assuming lack of documentation equates to criminality.
