Justice Salami: Obi Lacked Basis for 2023 Presidential Bid

Justice Salami expressed that Peter Obi lacked a constitutional basis to contest the 2023 presidential election, emphasizing that the Nigerian constitution does not recognize independent candidacy. He pointed out that Obi's exit from the People's Democratic Party and subsequent submission of his membership to the Labour Party raised questions about his eligibility.

Salami criticized the judiciary for its handling of election-related cases, citing inconsistencies in party membership documents, including a reference to the Kano State governor's case. He lamented the fundamental issues within the judiciary, attributing them to a lack of rigorous legal education and experience among judges.

Salami also noted that the elevation of less experienced judges to higher courts often overrides merit, which he believes contributes to the deterioration of judicial standards. His comments were made during an award presentation in Ilorin, Kwara State, where he also critiqued the broader political landscape and the judiciary's role in it.
