Nigerian Defence Minister Confirms Arrests in Alleged Coup Plot Against President Tinubu

The Nigerian Minister of Defence, Musa, revealed in an interview with TRT World, a Turkish news network, that military officers arrested for an alleged coup plot to oust President Bola Tinubu are prepared to face the consequences. The arrests, involving 16 officers including a brigadier general and a colonel, were made at the Defence Headquarters (DHQ) in October 2025.

The DHQ initially described the detentions as a result of indiscipline and breach of service regulations. However, on January 26, the DHQ publicly confirmed the officers' link to the foiled coup plot.

The conspiracy, uncovered through a joint intelligence operation involving the Army, DSS, and DIA, reportedly included plans to assassinate President Tinubu and Vice President Kashim Shettima. Musa emphasized that the accused officers will have access to legal counsel and be treated fairly throughout the judicial process.

Despite the seriousness of the allegations, due process and respect will be maintained. The Defence Minister stressed the awareness of potential consequences for the accused officers.
