Ofili Withdraws from Commonwealth Games Trials

Nigerian sprinter Ofili will not participate in the Commonwealth Games trials, as confirmed by her coach Denni Shaver. The trials, organized by the Athletics Federation of Nigeria, commence today in Lagos.

Ofili, 23, has been at the center of controversy following her failed attempt to switch her athletic allegiance to Qatar earlier this year. She had filed a change of allegiance but missed the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games due to circumstances related to this switch.

Although she was registered for the women’s 100m event for the Paris 2024 Olympics, her application was blocked by World Athletics due to concerns about her integrity in international competition. Despite speculation about her potential return to represent Nigeria, Shaver clarified that Ofili will not compete in the Commonwealth Games trials, and her entry request has been removed.

The trials will feature various events, including the women’s 5,000m final and men’s discus final, running from June 21 to June 23.
