Egba Leader Urges Democracy Ahead of Ogun 2027 Elections

On Sunday, Chief Mustapha Abdulhakeem Owolabi, known as MAO and the Akinfiwatolu of Egbaland, called on the people of Egbaland to heed the warnings of human rights lawyer Femi Falana regarding the dangers of flawed political party primaries. Speaking at the eighth annual lecture of Penpushing Media in Abeokuta, Owolabi, who is also the Chairman of the Egba Agenda Forum, stressed that credible elections begin with transparent party primaries.

He criticized the emergence of Senator Solomon Olamilekan Adeola as the preferred governorship aspirant of the All Progressives Congress (APC), claiming it sidelined capable indigenous Egba candidates. Owolabi argued that democracy cannot thrive with a defective primary process, which undermines moral legitimacy and accountability.

He emphasized the need for inclusiveness in the political process and called for traditional institutions and civil society to defend democratic principles, warning against the dangers of candidate imposition.
