Ogun State Links Ijebu-Ode Gas Emissions to Geology

The Ogun State Government has attributed the gas emissions occurring in Ijebu-Ode to natural geological activity, dismissing claims linking the phenomenon to traditional myths. During a town hall meeting, Dr.

Ola Oresanya, the Commissioner of Environment, explained that scientific investigations revealed that the gases emitted are mainly methane and sulphide, originating from underground geological fractures. These emissions are associated with the Ifewara-Zungeru Trans-Atlantic fault line, which stretches across Mojoda in Ijebu-Ode, Osun State, and extends to Zungeru in Niger State.

The commission noted that the affected area has historically been sparsely populated and includes schools and missionary institutions. Dr.

Tomi Coker, the health commissioner, advised residents not to panic and to follow public health guidelines, suggesting they cover their noses with wet handkerchiefs during gas emission incidents. Residents were also encouraged to contact the state's health emergency line for assistance.

Prof. Philip Ikhan from Olabisi Onabanjo University is leading further investigations into the situation.
