Ogun State Promotes Gender Inclusivity in Water Governance

Ogun State is addressing rural water scarcity by citing global best practices and emphasizing gender inclusivity in water governance. Dapo Okubadejo, during the 2026 World Water Day event in Abeokuta, highlighted the importance of treating water as a fundamental human issue linked to social equity.

He noted that women and youth, particularly in rural areas, face significant barriers in accessing water resources. The state aims to dismantle traditional systems that marginalize these groups.

Dr. Adedeji Ashiru, Managing Director of the Ogun Oshun River Basin Development Authority, stressed the need for inclusive governance that recognizes women's roles in water management.

He pointed out that millions lack access to safe drinking water, with women and girls disproportionately affected. The state has set a target of increasing female representation in water governance bodies to 40%.

Damilola Otubanjo, Special Adviser to the Governor on Water Resources, announced the launch of the Gatewai Water initiative to improve public water delivery and restore confidence in government management systems.
