Okoronkwo Defiantly Responds to Racism Ahead of AFCON

Esther Okoronkwo, a midfielder for the Super Falcons, responded defiantly to racist abuse on social media after she criticized a theft incident that affected several Nigerian players at the Marriott Hotel in Casablanca ahead of the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations. Okoronkwo revealed that cash was stolen from her and teammates, including goalkeeper Chiamaka Nnadozie, defender Michelle Alozie, and captain Rasheedat Ajibade.

Following her comments, her Instagram page was inundated with racist messages, prompting her to post, “Hate cannot drive out hate. Only love can do that.

We move forward with pride, unity and determination. See you on the pitch.” A suspect has been arrested in connection with the theft and is expected to make restitution.

Colin Udoh, a Nigerian journalist, called for action from FIFA and CAF regarding the racist abuse. Despite these challenges, the Super Falcons are focused on winning their 11th Women’s Africa Cup of Nations title, starting their campaign against Malawi on Tuesday.
