Prof. Tunji Olaopa Urges Agricultural Universities to Drive Economic Diversification in Nigeria

Prof. Tunji Olaopa, Chairman of the Federal Civil Service Commission, called on agricultural universities in Nigeria to prioritize diversifying the nation's economy during a lecture at the Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta (FUNAAB) in Ogun State. He highlighted the importance of integrating modern technologies like artificial intelligence, robotics, and drones into agricultural practices. Olaopa stressed the significance of sustainable approaches and the promotion of environmentally friendly practices in agriculture.

He questioned the effectiveness of research and development efforts by agricultural universities in addressing challenges faced by farmers and key players in the agricultural sector. Olaopa emphasized the need for these institutions to play a pivotal role in rural and national economic diversification. He also acknowledged the success of government agricultural programs in driving economic diversification.

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu's administration's National Agricultural Technology Innovation Policy (NATIP) was specifically mentioned as a key initiative to enhance technological advancements in agriculture and promote youth inclusion in the sector. Olaopa highlighted the importance of mechanization, digitalization, and research-commercial nexus in boosting Nigeria's economy.
