Lawyer Demands Apology from Onanuga Over False Claims

Abubakar Marshal, a human rights lawyer, has demanded that Bayo Onanuga, a special adviser to President Bola Tinubu, apologize and undergo an investigation for his comments regarding VeryDarkMan (VDM) in relation to a false AI-generated video. Marshal described Onanuga's post from May 27 as false and unbecoming of a public official, expressing disappointment in Onanuga, whom he characterized as a former pro-democracy activist and journalist who has allegedly abandoned his principles.

Marshal's statement, issued on May 28, argued that Onanuga's comments attack the rights of Nigerian citizens to criticize government policies and demand political change. He cited legal precedents supporting freedom of expression and emphasized that Onanuga should face consequences for spreading falsehoods.

Marshal also indicated that VDM reserves the right to seek civil remedies and called for appropriate sanctions against Onanuga for allegedly misinforming the public and causing embarrassment to the government.
