Boat Capsizes in Jigawa, One Dead, 39 Missing

On Sunday at 4:30 PM, a boat carrying 40 passengers, primarily female farmers, capsized in the Malamawar Yan Duts community of Ringim Local Government Area, Jigawa State. The Jigawa State Police Command confirmed that one body has been recovered, while 39 individuals remain missing.

The incident occurred as the boat was transporting the farmers, who were likely returning from their farms. The cause of the accident has not yet been established, but it is noted that such tragedies often occur in northern Nigeria during the rainy season, typically attributed to factors like overloading and strong water currents.

The police, led by Public Relations Officer Shi Isu Adam, deployed officers and relevant agencies to the scene immediately after receiving the report. Search and rescue operations are ongoing, with local divers joining the efforts.

Habibu Dauda, the chairman of the Ringim Local Government Emergency Management Committee, urged residents to remain calm and avoid spreading unverified information as updates will be provided once more information is available.
